So we are now one third of the way through the NASCAR season. Twelve of the thirty six races in the books. And I must say it has been really good.
This season had a new feel, a better feel. It’s has not been a boring ride around season like the last couple of seasons. It seems at every race ( even at typically boring Auto Club in California a track I really don’t like ) there has been some level of excitement. To be honest my least favorite race so far was at the typically exciting Bristol.
So we started out with a great Daytona 500, other than the track pavement problem in turn 1, the end of the race was great with Jamie McMurray winning.
Moving out west to California and Las Vegas we had a couple of good races there which are not usually the best of races.
Now back east in Atlanta we had the Brad Keselowski & Carl Edwards controversy when Carl got revenge on Brad over an earlier in the race incident, by spinning him on the frontstretch, which resulted in Brad’s #12 car flipping over. Everyone was ok but that began a series of mini rivalries.
Bristol was not the greatest of Bristol races and dissapointed. But short track racings excitment was not lost at Martinsville. With a crazy last few laps and Denny Hamlin storming bavkfir the win with the race nearly over, it was a great overall race to watch.
The good racing continued at Texas and Phoenix with fairly good racing throughtout the race at in the conclusion of each race. Denny Hamlin winning Texas after surgery two weeks earlier and Ryan Newman getting back into victory lane at Phoenix were great storylines. But just as good was the mini-feud betweeen teammates Jeff Gordon and 4-time defending champ Jimmie Johnson. Finally someone harrassing Jimmie which is what the majority of the fans out there want to see!
Racing then returned to Talledega and tacit finally got back to the way Talledega racing should be. Great racing throughout the course of the race and a great photo finish for Kevin Harvick winning again edging Jamie McMurray to the line. Virtually no single file, ride around racing,Talledega racing is back.
Richmond and Darlington provided some solid racing when the series went to those historic race tracks. Dover had some good racing near the end of the race there aswell.
It was now time for the all star weekend in Charlotte,North Carolina. There was some good racing on the track in the allstar race with some late drama between JGR teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch, with Kurt Busch taking home the million dollars for winning the event. A week later another solid race in Charlotte in the Coke 600 with Kurt Busch taking that event aswell.
The big thing though on All Star weekend was the grand opening on the NASCAR Hall Of Fame. A long time coming, the opening was a very historic event for the sport. Some day I plan on going to the NASCAR hall of fame to experience it in person.
So far an excellent season in NASCAR and a huge improvement over the past couple seasons. Hopefully the season keeps going well after this weekend in Pocono.
