    Dunlop Tortex Picks

    Dunlop Tortex Picks.

Although it seems like one of the most basic things when it comes to palying the guitar, choosing what pick you use is pretty important. I’m costantlyswitching picks – usually just grabbing the one closest to me :P – but recently I’ve been using different ones for different things. At the moment I use 3 different picks, an orange Dunlop Tortex (as shown in the picture on the left), a fender pick (have a pack of 6 + shown in picture below to the right) and funily enough a replica pick from the movie “Tenacios D and the Pick of Destiny”.

    Fender Pick.

The Tortex is awesome for strumming and doing power chords because seen as I’ve had it for nearly a year, the end has really worn down, and it makes an awesome sound against the strings. The fender picks wear down too, but seen as I have 6, I switch beetween them without noticing, so they wear down equally. So that means they have a better tip, so I use these more for songs where  I’ll have to be picking out notes of a chord, where I have to do pinch harmonics or when the song is mainly individual notes basically. Thats the same reason i use my PoD picks :D .

So what pick should YOU use?   Well I guess it depends on a few factors:

    • Whether you are Lead/Rythm guitarist.
    • What style of music you play.
    • What shape pick you like.
    • If you use aluminium picks.

If you are a lead guitarist I’d say to use something like the fender pick and if you are playing for a long time, get one with some grip on it. Rythm guitarists should get something like this pick – something quite thick with good grip.

I guess the main pick shape is ok for most types of music, so if you’re playing anything from blues to metal you could use picks like these, but if you’re palying jazz, it’s best to sue a teardrop shaped pick, as its smaller and fits jsut between your finger & thumb.

So that’s it, my first post on sl0rdonline.net, and definetley not my last. Have fun choosing which pick to use, and just be careful. After all, you don’t want it ending up like this do you?
